Visit of Kettering Citadel Band – Report

The 2nd and 3rd March saw Sheffield Citadel welcome the visit of Kettering Citadel Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Richard Phillips.  A capacity crowd filled The Citadel on the Saturday evening and thoroughly enjoyed a festival which featured the Band excelling in the playing of classics compositions such as “Celebration” and “Fire in the Blood” as well as more recent pieces like “Metomorphisis” composed by Bandmaster Philips and “Domi, Jesu” arranged by Euphonium player Andrew Wainwright.

Soloists featured during the evening were Gary Rose (Euphonium) and Adam Goldsmith (Trombone) who both delighted the congregation with their skillful playing of “Napoli”  and “Concert Piece” respectively.  Bandmaster Philips’ own composition “Fountains Flowing” which featured a trio of two cornets and flugel horn, also captivated those listening.  This trio was presented by Gary Fountain, Chris Hunt and Michael Barratt and it highlighted the brilliant instrumentalism of all three bandsmen.

Sunday meetings were lead by Lieut-Colonel Geoff Blurton, a former Divisional Commander of our Division, whose vast experience of the Army throughout the world was inspirational and thought provoking.

The weekend was a huge success and one which the Corps at Sheffield Citadel will remember for some time.  It also serves as a reminder of how fortunate we are in the Army, that people of such amazing musical ability have chosen to use their God given talents to serve him, with the aim of bringing the knowledge of God’s love to a world which is increasingly ignorant of what He offers.
