Andrew Blyth leads SCB rehearsal
It’s always good to have guest leaders at Band Practice and to listen to different personal views on Salvation Army music. Last week SCB was privileged to have Bandmaster Andrew Blyth, from the Army’s music department, with us in Sheffield to lead our rehearsal.
The Band enjoyed 2 hours under the leadership of Andrew and were challenged in the playing of The Present Age, which will be featured in programmes during 2013.
Andrew also introduced the Band to a beautiful piece of music by Les Condon, “In wonder beholding”, music which is particularly apt as we approach Easter, as well as a contrasting new march by Kevin Larsson entitled “Temple 125”.
We look forward to Andrew’s next visit some time …. 🙂
The 2nd and 3rd March saw Sheffield Citadel welcome the visit of Kettering Citadel Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Richard Phillips. A capacity crowd filled The Citadel on the Saturday evening and thoroughly enjoyed a festival which featured the Band excelling in the playing of classics compositions such as “Celebration” and “Fire in the Blood” as well as more recent pieces like “Metomorphisis” composed by Bandmaster Philips and “Domi, Jesu” arranged by Euphonium player Andrew Wainwright.
Soloists featured during the evening were Gary Rose (Euphonium) and Adam Goldsmith (Trombone) who both delighted the congregation with their skillful playing of “Napoli” and “Concert Piece” respectively. Bandmaster Philips’ own composition “Fountains Flowing” which featured a trio of two cornets and flugel horn, also captivated those listening. This trio was presented by Gary Fountain, Chris Hunt and Michael Barratt and it highlighted the brilliant instrumentalism of all three bandsmen.
Sunday meetings were lead by Lieut-Colonel Geoff Blurton, a former Divisional Commander of our Division, whose vast experience of the Army throughout the world was inspirational and thought provoking.
The weekend was a huge success and one which the Corps at Sheffield Citadel will remember for some time. It also serves as a reminder of how fortunate we are in the Army, that people of such amazing musical ability have chosen to use their God given talents to serve him, with the aim of bringing the knowledge of God’s love to a world which is increasingly ignorant of what He offers.

SCB at Signals Squadron
Yesterday a group of SCB made their way through the fog to be welcomed at the 64th Signals Squadron Headquarters in Sheffield. The Band had been invited to play at a Presentation which was being held to recognise the work and achievements of a number of Forces personnel. Also in attendance was the Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor of Sheffield.
SCB provided music before and after the presentation and also played The Salute to welcome in the official party and The National Anthem at the end of the proceedings. It was a privilege to be invited to take part at this event and to hear first hand of the commitment and achievements of many of Her Majesty’s Forces.
Kettering Band photos
This last weekend Kettering Citadel Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Richard Phillips, visited Sheffield and we shared in a great weekend of music, ministry and fellowship with them. A full report will follow soon, but in the meantime, check out these photos taken during the Saturday evening festival.
