Visit of Birmingham Citadel Band to Sheffield

Visit of Birmingham Citadel Band to Sheffield – April 10th & 11th 2010.
(report by Pete Longbottom)

A warm Yorkshire welcome was afforded to the visitors as they presented FANFARE AND FLOURISHES featuring the cornet and trombone sections, this was immediately followed by FALL AFRESH these two pieces whetting our appetites of what was to come.

Individual items presented fulfilled all tastes, from cornet solos TUCKER Gavin Lamplough, Euphonium BETTER WORLD David Taylor, trombone feature I WILL FOLLOW HIM, Tenor Horn OVER THE RAINBOW Neil Blessett, and Tuba the BARE NECESSITIES where the poor soloist was hijacked by the rest of the band.

The band’s presentation, sensitivity, and variety of music, entertained us and took us on a journey, but most of all challenged us.

Paul Meredith’s scripture presentation reminded us to review the way we look at our faith, the highlight of the evening for some was the band’s rendition of WERE YOU THERE reminding us of our Lords sacrifice.

The two final items a contemporary arrangement KERYGMA AND IRISH BLESSING brought the evening to a conclusion.

Invitations given to friends and colleagues resulted in new people attending with promises to revisit the fellowship.

Sunday morning we were invited by the Band to COME NOW IS TIME TO WORSHIP and the meeting supported the theme on three talks, LOOKING AT THE CROSS, LOOKING FROM THE CROSS , AND LOOKING BACK AT THE CROSS.

Sunday Night Live With The Band included the items LIGHT BRINGER , EASTER GLORY, trombone and xylophone solos by Mark Sharman and Robert Haywood.

NAME THAT TUNE, and a KARAOKE item enabled the congregation to participate in worship. Rob O’Connor reminded us that as Christians we need to work together as one in the body of Christ.

The home sections supported during the weekend and enhanced the Band’s message.

During the playing of Great Escape, the band moved to the body of the hall and concluded the weekend with an inspiring rendition of William Gordon’s GOD BE WITH YOU

The photos included show the trombones presenting I WILL FOLLOW HIM and the Band after playing KERYGMA.
